honest
honest i am old no longer do i run to catch a bus and often now i stop to catch my breath i see the flaps beneath my arms and am ashamed and wonder when i stopped being aware that they were there and i sit at the top of a hill to catch my breath and as i do i watch the watching me and i see myself as old my white hair is beautiful in the sunshine but so white and everyone stands to give me seat on the train my stomach will never be flat again, never i will never not have wrinkles i will always walk a bit slower than you i am old but please understand i am not stupid or uninformed or even marginally restricted in my worldview i am just old and i can't help that i don't wish it on anyone it sucks so be kind let us in we still think and feel really, we do You cannot conceive the many without the one. |

It's hard getting older, isn't it? I look in the mirror and the gray hairs don't look right. I tried coloring them once, but then that didn't look right either. I don't feel like I'm 50, but I guess I am.

I feel as though I'm not really qualified here to talk about getting old, since I can still see 40 very well in my rear-view mirror, but I enjoy reading your blog because you are so insightful on so many subjects.

Getting old sure as hell beats the alternative...at least most days. Besides, the young folks don't think we even know phrases like "go fuck yourself", or "up yours kid", so at some level it's very liberating.

I saw on one of those television news magazines where they created the experience of being old for people, so that they could experience empathy. The participants had to wear glasses that gave them imperfect vision, their hearing was muffled, and they wore a suit that made them stiff, inflexible, and slow. God, was that a depressing program! But yeah. I am still pretty physically vigorous, but I'm experiencing the arm flaps (no matter how much I lift weights and try to get muscular). Also the tummy. It kind of sucks knowing that it's irreversible at this point...

I'm less concerned with how I look and more with how I feel I feel pretty good most of the time.

Did someone treat you like you were dumb? Seriously?Want me to slap 'em one? Age cannot wither her, nor custom stale Her infinite variety. Other women cloy The appetites they feed, but she makes hungry Where most she satisfies. For vilest things Become themselves in her, that the holy priests Bless her when she is riggish. ~~ from Antony & Cleopatra

I don't know why you wrote this today but I suspect it may have something to do with the grandmother who was bullied by some young teens? If not, I know you probably read or heard about that story so it may have been partially the impetus for this. I too feel the physical changes that getting older has crept up on me, especially my left knee. But I can't grab things in my mind that I know are there, because I just said it a few minutes ago (happened Friday night). I also agree with the sentiments you have about how society (especially youngsters) treat the elderly. Today people attack the poor or handicapped just because they don't like the way they don't fit in. It's sad how the world is changing toward the elderly. 77 million people will be old soon...I'm one of them fast approaching it. I don't like what society let's happen. Not enough people step up for others. I know you're one of the angels that protects those in need. I know you hear it often, but I thank you for all you do for those folks and so many more. SNW One last thing...you'll never be "old" to us.

And old fart from these parts once said: "Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter." The name of that old fart was Samuel Clemens aka Mark Twain. And you probably thought I was referring to Solar! LOL.
