a stroll down memory lane
a stroll down memory lane When I was a I can remember packing a picnic and heading to the natural springs that feed the Suwanee River, that's where my Grandma lived. On the border of Florida and Georgia, in this tiny town. I have so many great memories of that place. I loved it there. The water was so clear and so cold that people would tape their names on their watermelons. I am not talking about watermelons bought at the grocery store no, these were bought from people who grew them in the fields around town at road side stands, They were fresh each and everyday. They are the best I have ever eaten. Anyways, we would float them in the ice cold water that came from springs. Now if they started to float past the bridge, which marked the place where you couldn't swim because that where the boats tied up, you just pushed it back far into the springs so they could start their journey all over again. It didn't even matter if it was yours or not, it was just something we all did for one another back then. Nothing like that would happen these days. Only bad thing about going to the springs was the boat ride getting there, we of course went by speed boat down the Suwanee in high fashion, my grandparents were on the top of the social ladder back then. They actually helped build that little town but anyways, what I dreaded, what scared the crap outta me were the alligators. You see, I was always there in August and when its that hot and humid the gators would lay upon the banks of the Suwanee and make this good forsaken sound. I think maybe it was also mating season... All I know they were big and aggressive. I can remember as we passed them sometimes they would quickly return to the water and try and catch our boat !! At least that is how it appeared to me back then.. Ok enough of strolling down memory lane. much love |

Thanks for sharing that memory LLL. I have some memories like that... One day, when I was a kid, we went to visit some friends of my grandparents. They only lived a couple of blocks from their house. Their house was on the beach with the back yard facing the ocean. Inside the grounds that were surrounded by tall walls, they had an assortment of wildlife. They had exotic birds, iguanas and a Galapagos turtle. I was so impressed with the turtle. I mean, this was not a little snapping turtle, this thing was bigger than I was (I was 8 years old). We are talking huge, the stuff that scares little kids for the rest of our lives... Except that, on this day the children were riding the turtle... so, on that day, I rode for the first and only time a Galapagos turtle... the way you turned the turtle was to tease him with your foot and his head would turn towards your foot as he was walking and you would go in that direction... He was very slow... so, you had time to get your foot out of the way... I didn't notice any kids with missing limbs so I figured it was safe for me... I used to love staring at the beach from my grandparents house... We would go down to the beach daily when we were out of school... thanks for sharing LLL and, here is a song that came to mind immediately upon reading your blog... THE BEATLES - "In My Life" There are places I remember All my life though some have changed Some forever not for better Some have gone and some remain All these places have their moments With lovers and friends I still can recall Some are dead and some are living In my life I've loved them all But of all these friends and lovers There is no one compares with you And these memories lose their meaning When I think of love as something new Though I know I'll never lose affection For people and things that went before I know I'll often stop and think about them In my life I love you more Though I know I'll never lose affection For people and things that went before I know I'll often stop and think about them In my life I love you more In my life I love you more To leave private messages, please use my confidential mailbox at my blog: Good luck!!!
