With This Ring Finale
With This Ring Finale It's exciting, to be helping with a real archaeological dig. Mr. Kirk promised to put their names in the report, and article he's gonna write about it. Oh, he's paying us to help too, twenty bucks. Anyway, where else can you get to play in the dirk, next to an adult, and he's teaching you how to play in it? Josh and David were digging in what had been a garbage pile, not far away, on the south side of the cabin. Suddenly Davids shrill voice cut through the silence of the forest. “I found bones, I found bone. I think it's a dead guy.” It wasn't really silent in the forest. There were the soothing sounds of the breeze caressing through the leaves , and the animals. It wasn't silent before David yelled out. It was very silent now. Even the soft whisper of butterfly wings fell silent. Mr. Kirk stood up and rushed over to David's side to inspect the remains of his find. It was getting late in the afternoon, as Mr. Kirk examined the bones, but instead of telling David his find was just the bones of a butchered bear, he showed us how to properly dig the bones out of the ground and to cover them in plaster bandages for protection while being transported. By the time we were done, it was past time to return to the cabin. It was past dark when we got back, and all we could do is talk about David's discovery. Mr. Kirk said we'd better take them back to the university to determine exactly what kind of bones they were. As we were turning in for the night David pleaded with his dad, to go home Sunday morning instead of afternoon. “Don't you want to go swimming and fishing? I promised you and Josh, if you helped me Saturday that you guys could swim and fish most of Sunday.” “We don't care, we want to show our bones to Mom and Josh's parents.” “Okay, if you're both sure, we can pack and leave in the morning. Now let's get some sleep, goodnight guys.” Pat's phone interrupted the evening twice more before the two of them closed their eyes due to exhaustion. Without warning they were both sound asleep. At 7:57am the phone blared it's distinctive ring-tone. Ring..ring..ring.. ri. Lu ran down the stairs and answered it on the forth ring. Without thinking Lu questioned the caller. “Josh, is it you calling?” Only to realize his eagerness as the voice on the other end of the call spoke. “Yes,... talk to Josh,... want to tell.. Josh, ...Josh.” “What do you want, who are you, why are you calling us?” Lu had many questions, but no answers. The voice on the other end just kept on repeating his request. Nothing Lu said mattered, and he couldn't keep the caller on the line anywhere near two minutes. Not only couldn't he keep the caller on the line, but the call started breaking up. Another call startled them at 8:45, and the voice sounded as though it were in a tunnel, but the request was the same. Then the phone rang again at 9:45, with the voice being barely audible. “Josh, Josh, good-bye, Josh thank you.” With those weak words the call ended with the beeping warning of the callers phone's battery going dead. As the call ended, a police cruiser pulled up, and two officers came to the door. “We got three more calls today and...” Lu emphatically began telling the officers. One of the officers interrupted him in mid sentence, telling him the phone tower was fixed and they got a triangulation on the call, without the usual two minutes needed. They were authorized to follow the police to the location if they wished. They didn't tell Mr. Fox where they were going, or that there was no danger expected. On the way to the car Mr. Kirk and the boys pulled up into the Kirk driveway and Josh jumped out running toward mom and dad. “Dad what's the cops doin' here, what happened, anyone hurt?” Josh screamed out, on his way across the street. “Guess what we found, guess?” “Never mind that right now, shut up and get in the car, we have to go somewhere.” Lu sternly commanded as he and Pat entered their car. David obeyed, and said not another word. The police lead the way, on the twenty minute quest to the source of the calls. Taking the exit off the highway, brought back sad memories. It was this exit they drove only two days ago, to dad's resting place. Holland's Groove Cemetery, is where dad's buried, what a coincidence. But who, in this part of town would be harassing us, there's almost nobody living out here, mostly a big cemetery, and.... His thoughts stopped as the squad car did, at the gate to the grave yard. “OMG,” fell out of Pats mouth and Lu's mouth just opened wide, as his jaw muscles went limp. David just sat there, quietly confused. The police slowly, cautiously, drove to the area where grand-pap's body was buried. Finally, David had to speak up. Things were getting' weird, and he wanted to know why the police escorted them to grand-pap's cemetery. “Dad, Mom, whats goin' on?” David inquired, not sure if he wanted to know. “Your father and I have been getting phone calls with your custom ring tone and the caller wasn't you, and the man kept asking for you.” “But that's impossi....” David began to tell her, before dad cut him off. “Hush, they're stopping.” Lu announced. The police got out first, then Lu, followed by Pat, then David hesitatingly exited the back seat. There were no sheds, nor vehicles for anybody to call from. Nobody else was in sight. Lu walked over to his fathers grave, his eyes beginning to well up with tears. “Mr. Fox, this is the location we triangulated to, and the program is accurate to within a hundred feet. This is the place, somewhere near this grave.” David had all he could take, and had to speak up. “Dad, dad, what I've been trying to tell you is, I don't have my phone, and I didn't loose it.” Lu looks at Pats phone in his hand, then at his . “What are you talking about, David? Your mother and I have been receiving calls all weekend from some man who wanted to talk to your grandfather.” “No dad it's not possible, you see, I took pictures of grand-pap's funeral the other day, and left my phone in his casket, so he could see the pictures when he wants. My phone is down there.” As he points to the newly filled grave. Grand-pap has my phone. He must have been calling for me.” “You're telling me it was my father, asking for you?” “I think so.” Lu stares at the phone, with tears blurring his view. He flips open the phone and dials Josh's number. Josh's voice message came on, and then half way through it, it stopped. Then silence, then a voice, “Josh?” Then silence again, then the tell tail sound of the phone warning, the battery was dead, then silence. Lu dropped to his knees sobbing, as he called out to his father. “Don't be dead, dad, don't be dead, Please.” But only silence came from the phone. “Dad please talk to me, please. I didn't know, I didn't know.” David knelt down on one side of Lu, and Pat on the other. They each put an arm around him. Grand-pap hugged him too, he was still there with them, he just can't use the phone. It's exciting, to be helping with a real archaeological dig.
