And music is one of my abiding passions: it is the light in my life. Jazz, rock, opera, soul, funk, reggae, chamber, even hip-hop and , it is all the substance of my soul: cut me and triple clefs and quavers ooze out. There have been several musicians in my life who have amazed and dazzled me with their talent, their artistry and their genius. Elvis would have to be the first artist that I really remember just really falling for everything about his style, his music and his entire nous. I still watch all of his movies: no matter how bad they are. I have made the pilgrimage to Graceland. I do not have a velvet Elvis painting though (or poker playing dogs on velvet, either). The next artist who I really fell for, and still listen to and follow, was David Bowie. Aladdin Sane, Scary Monsters, Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars are all albums that I have listened to over and over and over. I had the Aladdin Sane hair. I had the platform shoes. As I have gotten older and wiser and more knowledgeable, the music of David Bowie has taken on added resonance for me. And as a point of pride, and a salve to my ego, both of my worship at the Temple of David as well: especially Junior Wingman No. 2. Recently, Rolling Stone magazine compiled a list of the 100 greatest vocalists of popular music. Shockingly (at least to me and to my youngest ) my next favourite musician “only” came in at number 14: Freddie Mercury. This man should have been in the top three ‒ if not number one. With Freddy at the helm, Queen raised touring to an art form. If Queen did not perform the way that they did, then there would be no killer U2 shows with amazing lights and video, now would there have been the brilliant Genesis or Pink Floyd shows of the late ‘70s and ‘80s. Freddie was the greatest performer rock has ever spawned. And as great a performer as this man was, he was a better musician. And being a great musician, then he had the capacity to embrace the extraordinary musicianship of his band mates. Every Queen album is a treasured family member. My dad and I would go out and get them the day that they came out and listen to them together and try and figure out how they did what they did. I have just passed my vinyl LPs on to my youngest as she tries to only listen to vinyl when listening to music out loud. I tried to pawn some Abba off on her too ‒ but no dice. And there are other bands who I think are fantastic: U2 of course, Radiohead, Pink Floyd, early Stones and late Beatles. But, somewhere along the way, I became infatuated with one artist. This is an artist who released just one studio album which initially bombed. I would like to think that the US was not ready for his brilliance. ********************************************************************************************************************************** [Eternal Life (Jeff Buckley) Eternal Life is now on my trail Got my red glitter coffin, man, just need one last nail While all these ugly gentlemen play out their foolish games there's a flaming red horizon that screams our names And as your fantasies are broken in two Did you really think this bloody road would pave the way for you? You better turn around and blow your kiss hello to life eternal, angel Racist everyman, what have you done? Man, you've made a killer of your unborn ... Crown my fear your king at the point of a gun All I want to do is love everyone... And as your fantasies are broken in two did you really think this bloody road would pave the way for you? You better turn around and blow your kiss hello to life eternal Oh... There's no time for hatred, only questions Where is love, where is happiness, what is Life, where is peace? When will I find the strength to bring me release? And tell me where is the love in what your prophet has said? Man, It sounds to me just like a prison for the walking dead And I've got a message for you and your twisted hell You better turn around and blow your kiss goodbye to life eternal angel... Angel... ********************************************************************************************************************************** But the rest of the world was ready: he just never quite made it in his home country. I am talking of the late, very great, Jeff Buckley. And I am also talking about my favourite album of all: Grace. And, in my humble opinion, the very best American made rock album of all time. I cannot tell you why I love this album the way that I do. It is brilliant, it is haunting, it is balanced with rock tracks and love ballads. No matter the mood or occasion, a track on the album is perfect for that time and place. No track is any less perfect than the previous or next track. And there is just that tiniest hint of imperfection in each song to give it humanity. This is the magnum opus of a tortured soul rather than a work of musical genius: and yet it is a work of genius as well. The reason that I bring this up now is that I was recently perusing the British Top 100 Album Chart; which is something that I do in order to seek out new artists and albums to check out and see who is out there. That is how I found Estelle and Mercury Rev last year and The Priests this year. I also check out the US album charts to and found the Fleet Foxes and Conor Oberst last year. And while I was looking through the British charts, what did I find back on there and selling better than ever: my friend Grace. It seems that there was a performance of Leonard Cohen’s marvelous song “Hallelujah” performed on the British television show X-Factor. Jeff Buckley’s interpretation of this song is seen to be the definitive version of this song, although Rufus Wainwright has also performed it brilliantly (as heard in Shrek). When the X-Factor version was released with the intention of being the #1 single on the charts at Christmas (a very big deal in the UK ‒ watch Love, Actually for proof of this), Jeff Buckley fans all over the UK retaliated by buying so many downloads of the Grace version of “Hallelujah” that it went to #2 on the charts. And Grace went flying back up the charts, again. This is an album that was originally released on August 23, 1994. And it is an album that landed with a dull thud. This was also to be the only studio album completed by Jeff Buckley. His tour to support the album was captured on another of my favourite albums, Mystery White Boy. On May 29, 1997, Jeff Buckley went swimming in the Mississippi near Memphis and drowned. He was 30 years old. Jeff Buckley, and Grace, is revered especially by musicians and songwriters. Bob Dylan, Jimmy Page and David Bowie have all stated that they are huge fans and consider the album as one of the greatest of all time. I found the album after seeing it constantly referred to as an inspiration by many emerging artists. It was love the second I heard “Mojo Pin”. By the time I got to “Dream Brother”, I was sure that this was the greatest thing that I have ever heard. Should you be feeling jaded, or sad, or for that matter, truly happy, then listen to Grace. It will talk to your soul. And in a selfish sort of way, the legend of Jeff Buckley will outlive the real Jeff Buckley. There is this one studio album and there will never be a diminishing return of later studio material. And there will never be a sixty year old Jeff Buckley trying to sing “Lover You Should Have Come Over”. And somehow this makes him, and Grace, immortal. And is immortality not what every artist lives for? ********************************************************************************************************************************** Dream Brother (Jeff Buckley / Mick Grondahl / Matt Johnson) There is a sleeping near his twin The pictures go wild in a rush of wind That dark angel he is shuffling in Watching over them with his black feather wings unfurled The love you lost with her skin so fair Is free with the wind in her butterscotch hair Her green eyes blew goodbyes With her head in her hands and your kiss on the lips of another Dream Brother with your tears scattered round the world. Don't be like the one who made me so old Don't be like the one who left behind his name 'Cause they're waiting for you like I waited for mine And nobody ever came... Don't be like the one who made me so old Don't be like the one who left behind his name 'Cause they're waiting for you like I waited for mine And nobody ever came... Don't be like the one who made me so old Don't be like the one who left behind his name 'Cause they're waiting for you like I waited for mine Nobody ever came Nobody ever... I feel afraid and I call your name I love your voice and your dance insane I hear your words and I know your pain With your head in your hands and her kiss on the lips of another Your eyes to the ground and the world spinning round forever Asleep in the sand with the ocean washing over Asleep in the sand with the ocean washing over Asleep in the sand with the ocean washing over Ah do you meet the one I love and smell the one who loves you Dream brother, dream brother, dream, dream dream asleep in the sand with the ocean washing over ********************************************************************************************************************************** E---------------------------------------------------- B--4---4--3---3---3--1---1--0--1--3---3-------- G----0------0---0------0------------0------------- D---------------------------------------------------- A---------------------------------------------------- E---------------------------------------------------- |

GRACE/Jeff Buckley (hauntingly prescient to me in retrospect) There's the moon asking to stay Long enough for the clouds to fly me away Well it's my time coming, I'm not afraid to die My fading voice sings of love, But she cries to the clicking of time Of time Wait in the fire ... And she weeps on my arm Walking to the bright lights in sorrow Oh drink a bit of wine we both might go tomorrow Oh my love And the rain is falling and I believe My time has come It reminds me of the pain I might leave Leave behind Wait in the fire ... And I feel them drown my name So easy to know and forget with this kiss I'm not afraid to go but it goes so slow I loved this CD from the moment I got it ... And often have felt as if I'm sitting beside Mr. Buckley as he composed it. Just that eerie feeling of sharing space in a "Killing Me Softly" sort of way. You know what I mean ... LILAC WINE/Jeff Buckley (Originally performed by Elkie Brooks, but actually inspired to the version sung by Nina Simone -- and performed by Katie Melua) I lost myself on a cool damp night Gave myself in that misty light Was hypnotized by a strange delight Under a lilac tree I made wine from the lilac tree Put my heart in its recipe It makes me see what I want to see and be what I want to be When I think more than I want to think Do things I never should do I drink much more that I ought to drink Because (it) brings me back you ... Lilac wine is sweet and heady, like my love Lilac wine, I feel unsteady, like my love Listen to me... I cannot see clearly Isn't that she coming to me nearly here? Lilac wine is sweet and heady where's my love? Lilac wine, I feel unsteady, where's my love? Listen to me, why is everything so hazy? Isn't that she, or am I just going crazy, dear? Lilac Wine, I feel unready for my love ... This is my blog - [blog _Safira]. There are many like it, but this one is mine. RECOMMENDED READING: A F F The Only Site For Me
